SCOUTS from Australia and overseas are joining forces to create their own town of tents and campfires.
On New Year’s Day, 24 scouts from Albury, Wodonga, Howlong and Corowa will board a bus for the biggest event on the scouting calendar — the Australian Jamboree.
The event, held every three years, will see more than 11,000 scouts from Australia, Japan, Thailand and Britain converge on Elmore in Victoria for 13 days of adventure.
It costs $1240 to go, covering activities such as reporting on radio and in the daily newspaper, rock climbing, driving cars, canoeing, caving and circuses.
1st Albury Scout leader Wayne Clement said the camp was for scouts aged 11 to 15 and that they all had to get their pioneering badge to go.
“This camp gives scouts memories for the rest of their lives,” he said.
“It is a chance to learn leadership skills while making new friends.
“The whole time we are there it is just go, go, go. At the end of the camp they climb off the bus tired and dirty, but they all say it was the best fun they’ve ever had.”
The scouts turn Elmore, between Bendigo and Echuca, into a giant tent town.
It has its own shopping centre, 40-bed hospital, 24-hour fire and police stations and an airport.
Scott McAuliffe, 14, from Albury said all older scouts shared memories of past Jamborees and he could not wait to go.
