THOUSANDS of Scouts from around the world last night celebrated the opening of the 21st Australian Jamboree.
Known as AJ2007, the triennial event has drawn 8500 boys and girls and 3000 volunteer leaders to a tent city at Elmore, 175 kilometres north of Melbourne.
After a draining overnight bus ride from South Australia, Milly, 14, was looking to settle into camp before activities, including flying, water sports and abseiling, begin today. "I can't wait," she said yesterday. "We do activities, and I love camping."
Scouts are aged 11 to 15, and usually get only one chance to attend a jamboree. Groups are mixed to create troops of about 36, with four adult leaders. Troop 128, for example, comprises Scouts from Kew, Sale and East Timor.
Anacleto is a member of the small East Timorese contingent, which was helped to attend through fund-raising by Boroondara Scouts. "Making friends," he said, smiling, when asked what he wanted to do at the event, before adding, "canoeing and (rock) climbing".
More than 300 people from 30 countries are at the site, joining a 4109-strong Victorian contingent.
Along with a radio station and daily newspaper, the camp has an airport, hospital and 24-hour fire and police stations.
The jamboree, which runs until January 13, is the first in Victoria since Ballarat hosted the 16th in 1992.
