THE scouts have landed in Elmore, and they are setting their sights on Bendigo.

Hundreds of scouts from the 21st Australian Jamboree swarmed all over the city yesterday, on one of their four off-site trips.

As part of the jamboree, each of the more than 8500 scouts will have a day of activities at four sites in the region.

The first stop for some of the scouts was the Central Deborah Gold Mine, where they panned for gold, learnt about the city's goldfields heritage, and then took a ride on one of Bendigo's iconic trams into the centre of Bendigo.

The scouts may also consider applying for their spelunking badge, as the visit included the Mine Experience Tour, where they donned hard hats and lights for a 61-metre underground journey.

Paul Simons, leader from the Mount Lofty troop in South Australia, has been down a mine before, but enjoyed the chance to do it again.

'‘For a lot of the kids, it would have been the first time," he said. '‘The kids would have picked up on a lot of things, such as how you can tell direction by the seams in the rock." Central Deborah Gold Mine marketing manager Carlie Bell said the mine was as busy as she had ever seen it, with 1050 scouts expected each day for nine days, in addition to the mine's usual 250 daily visitors.

‘‘We're definitely at capacity. We've had to put on new volunteer guides," she said.

The mine's lift to the underground tour would effectively be running non-stop during the nine days the scouts were visiting, Ms Bell said.

Despite how packed the mine would be for the next two weeks, Ms Bell said she was glad to be busy.

‘‘We're pleased that the scouts identified the mine as one of Bendigo's key attractions, and a must-see for them." On their trip to Bendigo, scouts will also visit Bendigo Tramways, the Discovery Science and Technology Centre, the Zone, and have free time to explore the city.
