Scouts hit play dirt

SCOUTS at the 21st Australian Jamboree have had to bring everything they need for the two-week event.

Among the most important requirements are clothes they're not particularly fond of, because several activities at the jamboree are designed to get the scouts as filthy as possible.

The Milo Venture Extreme is one of the four main on-site activities that each scout will spend half a day at, with participation counting towards their Jamboree Award.

The activity gives scouts, aged between 11 and 15, a taste of what they can expect as a Venturer (for children between 14 and 18).

The commando course combines ropes and logs with a lot of mud, with the dust only adding to the dirty conditions.

Many scouts ignored the sensible way to complete the obstacles, jumping straight into the mud pools instead.

"It's the best activity - kids really love this one," said Cat Sellers, from Venturers.

"And all the scouts love to get the Venturers muddy." Clothing for the activity was ideally something the scouts could throw away at the end, Ms Sellers said.

Billycarts were also on offer, with scouts putting together their own vehicle from pre-assembled parts.

"They're basically made - all the scouts have to do is put a few pins in," Ms Sellers said.

Despite the relatively easy construction, many billycarts were not surviving a full lap of the dusty course.

"With this one, we seem to be breaking a lot of wheels," Ms Sellers said.

"Kids are trying to Tokyo Drift (like the Fast and the Furious movie of the same name) around a corner, and it doesn't really work."

Scouts also taxed their brains at Milo Venture Extreme, completing initiative activities.
