Almost 12,000 scouts from around Australia and 30 other nations are descending on the tiny northern Victoria town of Elmore for the 21st Australian Jamboree.

The scouts began arriving today for the 12-day event, held every three years, with Chief Scout of Australia Governor-General Michael Jeffery to address the jamboree at its official opening tomorrow night.

Activities include sailing, learning to drive, rock climbing and circus skills followed by night-time entertainment filling three arenas.

The event costs $11 million, and hosts visitors from many international troops, including Japan, Britain, New Zealand and East Timor.

Six scouts from Elmore, two kilometres down the road from the jamboree site will also be there.

The 21st Australian Jamboree is the first event of scouting's year-long worldwide celebration of its 100th birthday.
