Traders in Echuca's historical precinct praised the behaviour of Scouts visiting Echuca yesterday as part of the 21st Australian Jamboree.
Echuca Heritage Sweet Company owner Ken Wells said the Scouts had modelled exemplary behaviour.

"They have been wonderful," he said.

"They are very polite and wellbehaved."

The 12-day jamboree, which officially began on Tuesday, will see each of the Scouts, dressed in bright blue t-shirts, visit Echuca over eight days as one of four days of off-site activities. The first group arrived on Wednesday.

Businesses in the area also reported excellent trade as the children flocked to the ice-creameries, confectionary stores and souvenir shops.

Port Ice Creamery's Alan Docking said, thanks to the Scouts, his business was a long way in front of where it would usually be.

"They're good customers - a very happy-go-lucky crowd," he said.

After arriving from their base camp in Elmore, the Scouts were given a timetable and divided into two groups.

Half departed for Victoria Park to undertake orienteering exercises, while the remaining group was given the morning to tackle activities at the port, including a 45-minute paddlesteamer cruise and a visit to Sharp's Magic Moviehouse and Penny Arcade.

Paddlesteamer operators were impressed with the young people, who showed great interest in the area's history.

Disembarking from the PS Canberra after a guided tour by skipper Peter Garfield, Camberwell South Scout Catherine Maygothling said she was intrigued to learn "about the drought and how people used to picnic on the bottom of the river".

Murray River Paddlesteamers coowner Vern Beasley said the young people were a delight to have on board.

"A few had steers of the boat and we managed to bring it back without any damage," he joked.

"It's gone very well."

According to Campaspe Shire recreation officer Ken Oberin, the success of the event was due to the efficiency of the jamboree's organisers.

"They've run it with a military kind of precision," he said.
