The 21st Australian Scout Jamboree gets off to a rocking start with a mystery performer entertaining the crowd of almost 1200 at Elmore  tonight in its 1st nite.

Organisers are keeping tight-lipped about who the entertainer is, but it is tipped to be a big name.

Chief Scout of Australia, Governor-General Michael Jeffery, will address the jamboree at the $11 million event's official opening tonight.

The stage of the giant Coca-Cola Arena has been used by many music acts in Australia, including pop star Robbie Williams on his recent tour.

Today's entertainment will include star-turns from some of the 8000 scouts attending the event, held at the Elmore Field Days site.

About 300 scouts from countries including the UK, United States, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Mauritius, will also join in the jamboree fun today.

The field days site has been transformed into a tent city, with a scout hospital, police and fire station.

Jamboree chief director Peter Mentiplay estimates the event he began planning five years ago will inject $10.5 million into the local economy.

And $700,000 of the $1.3 million food budget is local produce.

The jamboree will contribute infrastructure worth about $600,000 to the field day site.
Organisers promise a range of entertainment on each of the 12 days at the two outdoor arenas and one indoor arena.

People aged 11 to 61 will be involved in entertaining the scouts.

There will be 160 performers, including 20 bands, an orchestra, clowns and a magician.
At the Beach Hut, the slightly smaller outdoor arena, a large variety of local bands are set to wow the crowds.

Discos, a noise workshop and Jamboree Idol will also be held at the Beach Hut.
At the indoor arena, The Place, there will be a "glow night/UV party", bogan karaoke, trivia, bubble night, a Simpsons marathon and beach night.

A range of on-site and off-site activities have been planned for the scouts and a team of 13 four-seater Cessnas will be making constant trips, with flights leaving every minute.
The jamboree marks the first event of scouting's year-long worldwide celebration of its 100th birthday
