Thousands of Scouts camping out in Elmore for the 21st Australian Jamboree were reminded of the lack of rain on Monday when their tent pegs buckled.

Camping director Alistair Horne said about 3000 industrial-strength tent pegs were sourced locally after those the Scouts brought with them were bent out of shape from the dry, hard dirt.

Holes were pre-drilled for other tent pegs.

The density of the ground showed how little rain the area had had in recent times, he said.

"The ground is very hard, but we've adapted."

Campaspe Shire's recreation officer Keith Oberin said he was not surprised at the difficulties the Scouts faced in erecting the tents.

"The drought has not made the site very hospitable," he said.
