The central Victorian town of Elmore is hosting about 12,000 Scouts from 20 countries for a jamboree.

The event is held in Australia every three years and is being attended by Scouts aged 11 to 15, and several thousand helpers.

It finishes on January 13.

Jamboree spokesman Andrew Taylor says the Scouts are staying in a self-contained village.

"It has all the infrastructure of a city - police station, fire station, hospital, a daily newspaper, its own radio station," he said.

"We have a few technological innovations for this particular jamboree.

"Every member of the jamboree, children and adults, will have a barcoded wristband, it will allow us to track people as they enter and leave the site."
